Five Simple Tips to Keep Your Teeth White in the New Year

Brush Basics

How often have you been changing your toothbrush? If you’ve been changing your toothbrush out every 3-4 months then you’re in the clear! If not, try starting in the new year for a new smile! If you notice that your bristles are frayed replace your brush sooner for maximum efficacy. As you probably already know, your toothbrush can play host to germs from illness but also can house bacteria even when you’re in perfect health! Changing your brush can help avoid brushing with germs and bacteria that will leave your teeth dull and discolored.

Good Oral Hygiene Routine

We know you know because you’ve heard it a thousand times, but really.. we mean it! The best part of a good oral hygiene routine is to brush twice daily. Brushing your teeth helps with plaque removal and the prevention of stains before they start. Have you forgotten your floss? Try picking that habit back up in the new year to remove food between the teeth and prevent cavities from forming. You may be skipping your tongue, but here’s why you shouldn’t. Bacteria can easily rest on the surface of your tongue which will inevitably increase the amount of exposure your teeth have leading to discoloration.

Rinse with Water After Eating

This is an oldie but a goodie, we promise! Are you indulging in the last few remaining treats from the holiday? Not to worry, it’s okay to splurge every now and then! Your teeth don’t have to suffer either.. just rinse after you eat to help dislodge any material from your teeth which will yield bright white teeth!

Find Foods Friend For Your Teeth

I know, I know. We just wrapped up the holidays so the last thing you’re thinking about is your teeth, right? Well, if you’ve made a new year resolution try adding better oral health as your second resolution! Try to incorporate crunchy veggies and fruit into your diet to help saliva production which will help eliminate pesky bacteria buildup! Add healthier foods to keep not only your bones strong but tooth enamel strong as well! Strong teeth are more stain resistant and hold up better over time! Looking for healthier snack options? Try adding in apples, kale, nuts, cheeses and milk!

Set the Stain-Causing Substances to the Side

If you enjoy your morning coffee, afternoon soda, or evening glass of red wine you may notice your teeth have taken a hit. Try something different in the new year so you can have your favorites while also putting your teeth first. Try to limit your intake on drinks and foods that are the biggest threats to your teeth. Another great method to limit the contact of stain causing residue is to drink through a straw. If you are a smoker or chew tobacco make a resolution to your health and to your teeth for a better you in the new year!

Visit Your Dentist

A lot of people are scared to visit the dentist. You shouldn’t be. We don’t judge your teeth or you! We accept you as you are and don’t expect perfect oral health in every mouth we treat. Visiting your dentist every six months for your routine cleaning is the easiest way to keep your teeth clean, white, and healthy! Your toothbrush is no match for your dentist, not to mention, your insurance usually covers it – YAY!
